How to Break Bad Eating Habits

Self discipline isn’t the easiest thing in the world. If it was, we would all do it more. For example, I know that drinking a lot of beer is NOT good for me. I am also committed to my health.

Currently I have a beer or two every day. Before I started to work out with Karra Crawford, my personal trainer, I was having 4 beers a day or more. No wonder I’ve gained weight!

I am committed to cut my beer drinking even more. I’m not interested in going cold turkey. I brew beer, I love beer, and I want beer in my life. However, I don’t have to have it hurt my health.

Here are some tips for breaking bad eating (and drinking!) habits.

Be Forgiving

First off, this may not be easy for you. If you have one bad day (like I did on Saturday), it doesn’t mean your whole week is ruined, or your whole weekend is ruined. Every day is a new day you can start with. Forgive yourself, and start over again. There is no point in beating yourself up over the past. Look instead into the future and remember what you are committed to.

Remember Why You Are Doing This

Are you doing this for health reasons? Are you doing this because you want a hot bod? Remember why you are doing what you are doing. It will help you get back on track. For me, I want to be in the best shape of my life when I turn 33, and for my wedding. I also want to keep this health kick going for the rest of my life. My whole family is eating healthier and the kids are losing weight without even working out!

Find a Healthier Replacement

Do you love chips? Try cutting up cucumber with a little soy sauce. Miss chewing on chocolate during the movies? Try grapes and a healthy go to snack.  For beer, I take a little bubbly water and add some frozen berries to it. It gives me that carbonated drink, tastes good, and is something I enjoy.

Yesterday during our Father’s Day BBQ,  I had a beer, a couple of glasses of my bubbly drink, and another beer. Usually at these types of parties I drink a lot. This time, I watched myself. I had a blast and I feel great this morning.

Have Smaller Quantities

If you love having ice cream in the evening, have only half a scoop instead of two scoops.  I am actually going to start doing this with beer (and I haven’t). Usually for a $1 more you can get a large beer instead of a small. I’m going to switch to the smaller beers from now on.  So glad I can listen to my own advice! 😀

Introduce Days Without Your Treat

I am trying to do 2 to 3 days a week with no beer. I’m not going cold turkey. It is a bit hard, but I have cut down on beer immensely. And it is showing in my waist. It gets easier when you start to see the reward.

Use It As A Reward for Working Out

On days I don’t work out, I don’t get beer. On days I do, I do. Now that might not be the best if you are trying to do the step above, and have some days with no treat, but see what works for you. When it is a reward for hard work, that is one thing. When I’m doing it just because, that is another.

Save Your Treat for a Special Occasion

I like beer on tap. So I’m not drinking bottled beer anymore. This is great because I don’t drink at home much (unless we get a growler). If you love something, save it for when you eat out. You will eat it much less and your habit will form that you don’t have it while at home.
